Description: We have developed "The Movie Making Process" as a learning and teaching tool for the demands of the 21st Century. This process incorporates early childhood developmental skills and individual learning styles. (Multiple Intelligences)Local students and community members "star" in these movies and the active use of the finished project taps into the latest scientific research on the power of "paying attention" for increased learning and retention. This process is fast, fun and economical. We work with shools and cummunities to create new projects, or offer detailed shooting scripts and projects templates for replication. Our current movies are bullying/harassment and dangers of methamphetamine

How Program is Funded: We have funded our own work through research and development, with some grant assistance for school projects. Many arts grants are becoming available for projects that are community collaborations and can "show" how the arts can be used effectively for education and social change. We can offer assistance with project narratives for those seeking grant applications. (Art, service learning, violence prevention, etc) Cost of the script is minimal and our movie example is free with the script.
Evidence of Effectiveness: Internal evaluation in progress, External evaluation in progress, Final evaluation report available

How do you know your program is effective: The process of making the movie is based on the science of early childhood development and Multiple Intelligence Theory. The concept of "the movie" taps into the positive power of the media arts and our love for cinema and reality. Instead of simply watching a movie, be in one! The viewing of the movie uses the scientific research of neuroplasticity; the brain's ability to rewire itself. We have used this successfully in social services, schools, probation and now in the larger community.

What has not worked in the program any why: The program does not work well if no one uses the finished movie as a continuous teaching tool. Some feel the creation of the project is sufficient. It is not. It is a wonderful experience, but it is only when the movie is "watched", preferably more than once, that is offers it's biggest potential for increased learning. The most creative teachers have been able to significantly reduce classroom behavior problems and increase student maturity skills by showing the movie over and over.
