Description: In the 2002-2003 school year a complete analysis was done of the attendance policy and procedures for MCVSD51, as well as for participating court and community agencies. MCVSD51 had a 21% truancy rate at that time. Because of the changes implemented we now range from 3% to 5.5% truancy with average daily attendance in the 90th percentile.

How Program is Funded: No new moneys were expended to accomplish this goal. No grant funding was accessed. All changes were internal to the organizations involved requiring a shift in procedure and collaboration.
Evidence of Effectiveness: Internal evaluation in progress, Internal evaluation completed, Preliminary results available (includes draft papers, powerpoint presentations, etc.) Evaluation is ongoing every 30 days.

How do you know your program is effective: Truancy was reduced from 21% to a range of 3% to 5.5% depending on the time of year. Average daily attendance is now in the 90th percentile.

What has not worked in the program any why: Not enough realistic sanctions for high school students. Incarceration should not be a sanction, but currently is listed as such in statute.
