Description: The Truancy Intervention Program is a collaborative effort that strives to ensure an education for every child. Our goal is to improve attendance, reduce crime & increase parent involvement & accountability. Many students with attendance concerns come from at-risk families. The Truancy Intervention Program strives to prevent truancy by finding & eliminating the cause of the attendance issues. We are housed at the Michigan Department of Human Services & they provide MANY services for our families. We partner with many other prevention service agencies for counseling, classes etc. The business community & other service organizations donate services & products to help meet the family's needs

How Program is Funded: State of Michigan Child Care Fund budget through 13th Judicial Circuit Court Family Division (Grand Traverse County)-serving at-risk youth. Grand Traverse/Leelanau Co. Department of Human Services-provides housing, computers and supplies at no cost. Traverse City Area Public Schools-monetary donation to the Child Care Fund Kingsley Area Public Schools-monetary donation to Child Care Fund. Individual, business and service club donations which may not happen every year.
Evidence of Effectiveness: Internal evaluation completed, External evaluation completed, Quarterly Reports

How do you know your program is effective: Attendance data collected from our largest school from 2000 to 2005 there has been a 28% decrease in unexcused/unverified absences at the elementary level & a 25% decrease in unexcused/unverified absences for grades 7 through 10. The principals & secretaries fill out an evaluation every year & the feedback is that the program is working! Parents & students are responding! Grand Traverse Co. Sheriffs Dept reports a decrease in police contacts during school hours since the start of the program.

What has not worked in the program any why: A number of things have been changed, added and modified over the years to meet the needs of our families but nothing has NOT worked. The key component that makes the program successful is the colaboration of the Court, the Prosecutor, law enforcement, the schools, prevention service agencies, and the community.
