Description: Granite School District’s program is designed to respond to habitual truancy at both the elementary and secondary school levels. This approach consists of collaboration amongst school, court and law enforcement officials in which each agency contributes key actions that respond to truancy. Our process involves graduated measures beginning with least restrictive responses to chronic truancy that can ultimately culminate in court proceedings. Student and parental behavior is addressed through approaches that seek to create greater awareness to the importance of education while instilling accountability. Program staff include coordinators, secretaries and attendance specialists.

How Program is Funded: Title 2B Utah State Reading Initiative (Federal), Title 5 Innovative Programs (Federal), Senate Bill 230
Evidence of Effectiveness: Internal evaluation in progress, Internal evaluation completed, Preliminary results available (includes draft papers, powerpoint presentations, etc.)

How do you know your program is effective: Granite School District’s program could be considered in its relative infancy. Though we have had a truancy program exist for many years, our current program design is two years old. We have maintained records that show increased attendance at various levels of intervention. Statistical measurement reveals that attendance has increased 80% at the elementary level, 68% at the Jr. High level and 59% at the high school level through program intervention efforts (2003-2004 School year).

What has not worked in the program any why: As with many programs, Granite School District faces obstacles. Critical contributions from key collaborators is sometimes absent within the process. Other issues such as funding and staff development impact program consistency at the point of intervention. Court calendaring and availability impact the likelihood and timeliness with which referrals are heard in court. Key stakeholder buy-in (e.g. differing school administrations) has also hampered consistency issues with program delivery.
