Description: The Elementary Truancy Reduction Program is targeted at elementary students between 1st and 6th grades. Students are identified based on the total number of unexcused absences. Before selection students are screened by an administrator, social worker and attendance specialist. After five unexcused absences a first notice is mailed to the legal guardian of the student(s) and incentive contracts and tracking begin. If truancy continues a second notice with an invitation to a truancy group is sent via certified mail. During the truancy groups the facilitator (coordinator), explains the truancy process and responsibilities to guardians. These groups are designed to initiate two way communication and attempt to resolve issues. Data gathered during these meetings are tracked using a spreadsheet.

How Program is Funded: Title 2B Utah State Reading Initiative, Title 5 Inovative Programs and Senate Bill 230.
Evidence of Effectiveness: Internal evaluation in progress, Internal evaluation completed, Preliminary results available (includes draft papers, powerpoint presentations, etc.)

How do you know your program is effective: Granite School District’s program could be considered in its relative infancy. Though we have had a truancy program exist for many years, our current program design is two years old. We have maintained records that show increased attendance at various levels of intervention. Statistical measurement reveals that attendance has increased 80% at the elementary level. Further details are available upon request.

What has not worked in the program any why: During the last two years we have restructured our program to improve communication and make more effective use of technology. Two difficulties we have had: 1) Gaining buy in from all program participants and 2) Bringing those with limited tech skills up to speed.
