Description: The Durant Truancy Program employs one full time Truancy Coordinator who works with the county District Attorney to address truancy issues. The program is set up to address students and their parents as soon as the student has 3 or 4 school absences by letter. Once a student has 5 absences the student and their parent are sent a subpoena to appear in Truancy Court. Parents are required to attend once per week for 3 weeks. Students attend court once per week for a minimum of 6 weeks. Students must present a grade and conduct sheet from their classes at each court appearance. While under court supervision a student may only be absent with a doctors note or with permission of the school nurse.

How Program is Funded: The program is currently funded through a Safe Schools Healthy Students federal grant. The district attorney volunteers his time.
Evidence of Effectiveness: Internal evaluation in progress, External evaluation in progress, Preliminary results available (includes draft papers, powerpoint presentations, etc.)

How do you know your program is effective: The program is currently monitored by outside evaluation. Records are kept on grades, attendance, discipline referrals, and attendance.

What has not worked in the program any why: We have had more resistance at the high school level and have been challenged more by both parents and students. The program would not be as effective if not reinforced by stiff fines and enforcement of laws from the district attorney's office.
