Description: Middle School age students who would be suspended from school because of truancey and behavioral issues putting them at risk of educational disruption. there are 6 Middle Schools in Davis County Utah involved. The focus of the program is service learning rather than suspension. These student are involved in various service project in the community helping with literacey in three head start project, food bank, senior citizens centers and on-site projects for variuos world wide humanitarian projects to mention a few.We also have "Trackers" in each of the schools who work primarlly with the student referred to this program. The project provide structure, consequence and mentoring

How Program is Funded: Utah Department of Education recieved safe school money to address the Turancey issues in the State. Davis County applied for the money in grant form with this proposed project. The grant parameters were to involve Service Learning and truancey/suspension concerns.
Evidence of Effectiveness: Internal evaluation in progress, We will have draft results data and hopefull a power presentation in Fall of 2005

How do you know your program is effective: With the program we have trackers who monitor the students in the 6 schools. The students are monitored on improved school attendance ,academics and behavior concerns. that are ussually measured in this school district by ascribed behavioral points. Also repeat students to the program. The trackers also develop meaningful mentoring relationships to these student increassing school connectedness. Now in it's second year the numbers tell us that the project has been sucessful

What has not worked in the program any why: We really wanted to develop a collaberation with the State Juvenile Justice system and last year we worked with them on the project. In the end they did not have the flexability that was needed to address a larger student base. They had narrow difinitions of community service and truancey. This year it was decided that it would be school based.
